Nearly five years
ago, the Commonwealth joined 14 states in a multi-million
dollar mission to improve leadership in public schools: the
State Action for Educational Leadership Project (SAELP).
Created by The Wallace Foundation in 2001, SAELP is a
dual-phase grants initiative assisting states in the
development and the implementation of policies and laws
designed to enhance the capacity of school principals and
superintendents to improve student performance.

Issue Briefs and Legislative History |

As a service to the Virginia educational policy community,
including legislators, educators, school board members and
parents, CEPI is now providing policy briefs and legislative
histories available free at www.cepionline.org.
These short summaries of current issues are information
packed. Although these briefs do not advocate specific
positions or legislative proposals, they will prove helpful
to all involved in important public policy dialogue.

Using Mediation?

More frequently, school districts are finding mediation a
useful tool in a wide-range of problem-solving initiatives.
CEPIs Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Richard S. Vacca,
is known statewide for his effective use of mediation as an
approach to problem solving. For additional information on
